Wall framing calculator
Estimate studs and plate footage for your wall runs, with spacing and extra framing taken from your plans.
Understand the number
How this estimate works
For each wall: round up length in inches ÷ stud spacing, then add one end stud. Add the extra studs you specify and your allowance. Plate footage = total wall length × total plate layers. Stock-board quantity is a minimum based on footage, not an optimized cut list.
Start with wall runs, not house square footage
Two homes with the same floor area can have very different wall lengths, openings and roof structures. Add each exterior or interior wall run separately. This avoids treating a floor-area rule of thumb as a lumber takeoff. The estimate includes an end stud for each run; shared corners and intersections still need review against the framing details.
Use the plans for the rest of the package
Choose stud length, lumber size, grade and treatment from the construction documents. Headers, beams, floor joists, roof framing, sheathing, connectors and hold-downs are outside this wall-material estimate. Do not subtract door or window widths from a wall run without accounting for the required framing around those openings. Ask your builder or lumber supplier to turn the plans into the final purchase list.
