How this estimate works

Measured area × depth in inches ÷ 324 gives cubic yards. US short tons = cubic feet × supplied density in lb per cubic foot ÷ 2,000. Bag counts use the volume on the bag and round up.

Match the material to its purpose

A decorative gravel bed, mulch layer, compacted base and fill area are different jobs. Ask for the material specification before comparing prices. Use the average depth over the area; irregular ground may need additional measurement. This calculator does not apply an assumed compaction or settling factor.

Compare delivered quantities in the same unit

Suppliers may quote by yard, ton, bag or load. Obtain the density for a weight conversion and the actual quantity for a load comparison. Moisture and material composition can change weight. Confirm delivery access, unloading location and whether spreading or compaction is included. Keep a delivery ticket so a later order can be compared with what arrived.

Before you request a quote

  • Material and intended use specified
  • Average depth measured
  • Density supplied for any ton conversion
  • Delivery and spreading distinguished
  • Site access and unloading location agreed
